Autumn

Rainer Maria Rilke - Sun, Sep 23rd 2012

Woburn Park is home to the largest herd of Pere David's Deer in the UK. Originally from China, this species was saved from extinction in the 1830s by the 11th Duke of Bedford who brought the last remaining animals to Woburn. In 1985, the 14th Duke of Bedford gave 22 deer to the Peoples Republic of China to reintroduce this species to the former Imperial Hunting Park.

The leaves are falling, falling as if from far up,

as if orchards were dying high in space.

Each leaf falls as if it were motioning 'no'.

And tonight the heavy earth is falling

away from other stars in the loneliness.

We're all falling. This hand here is falling.

And look at the other one. It's in them all.

And yet there is Someone, whose hands

infinitely calm, holding up all this falling.

Rainer Maria Rilke   (1875 - 1926)
