Durham University establishes Catholic Social Teaching post

Christopher Lamb - The Tablet - Thu, Apr 3rd 2014

The University of Durham has established a new academic role focused on Catholic Social Teaching, believed to be the first of its kind in any secular higher education institution.

Applications will be open at the beginning of next month for the St Hilda Chair in Catholic Social Thought and Practice which has been set up to promote this area of church teaching to wider society as well as undertake academic research.

The role is being advertised at a salary of between £47,787 and £53,765, although more could be offered. The £2 million endowed post has received backing from the Vatican, Cardinal Vincent Nichols and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

Benefactors for the chair have come from the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. The holder of the new role will be required to bring the insights of Catholic Social Teaching to major economic, social and political issues.

The chair has been set up by the Durham’s Centre for Catholic Studies along with the university’s business school.
