Commentary on the Gospel of
Ash Wednesday
Today we begin the season of Lent when we are asked to deepen our relationship with God and to become more involved in the Christian life. Although we want to be people of the gospel and of Christ we know that we are often pulled in opposite directions. We begin with a day of fast and abstinence to help us do penance for the times we have weakened our relationship with God and each other.
Lent gives us the chance to put things right, to put Christ more at the centre of our lives and to be ready to begin a new life at Easter with the Risen Christ. Let us seize the opportunity and renew our lives before God.
