Commentary on the Gospel of
NOW it is Jesus' turn to speak his mind about those who have sought to test him and to make him look stupid or ungodly. We are told to obey the teachers of the law in what they say when they teach, quoting Scripture, but not to obey them or follow them in what they do. They are hypocrites, and worse, they lay heavy burdens on others and do not lift a finger to help them. They are cold-hearted, demanding and unlike Jesus' Father. They are self-righteous, demanding attention and public respect while inwardly shallow and filled with pride. We are not to be like that-we are to be servants of all, humble and lowly before all, knowing our God sees into our hearts. Are we good models? What are we teaching by our behaviors, decisions and lifestyles? Why are we religious, devotional? Are we truly servants?
