Commentary on the Gospel of

Fr. Alex Gobrin, cmf

“My daughter has just died, but come and she will live.” What a statement of faith, and a powerful one. What could be the basis of this act, of this trust? Perhaps this certain father had heard about this Jesus doing miracles; or maybe he had seen one. Perhaps there were no other options: his daughter was already dead. Or maybe despite of the pain he suffers, he did not want to give up hoping. Maybe this father has learned at some point in his life that hoping is meaningful; that hoping his daughter will live again will show how much he loved his daughter.

Matthew’s version of this narrative really pushed this father to the limit: his daughter is already dead. But he hoped.  Do you think hope is meaningful? Do you think that hoping the best for the other can show how much you care?
