Two sisters, both busy in their own way – Martha preparing everything for Jesus and Mary listening to the Lord. The Lord commends Mary because she has chosen the better portion. What is this better portion? Is it just listening to the Word of God or doing his works? In Psalm 16.5 we read “the Lord is my inheritance and cup, my chosen portion”. Again in the book of Numbers (18:20) we read God telling Aaron, “You have no share with people, am your inheritance and share”. So the better potion that we are to choose is Jesus himself.
