Commentary on the Gospel of

Fr. Maria Arul Jesu Robin, cmf

Today, we live in a highly consumertistic society of computer age. We want everything and we feel that we can do anything. We want money, comfort and pleasure. We want food, house, money, job, education, comfort, pleasure and what not. Even after getting all these, we are unhappy, frustrated and disappointed. We have no peace, no happiness and no satisfaction. We continue to miss something. The crowding of Westerners to the Ashrams of East is the clear indication of this search of man: a deep search for peace, happiness and meaning for life. Neither money nor sex nor drugs would guarantee genuine peace, happiness and meaning for life. Yes, the real source of peace, happiness and satisfaction is Jesus and Jesus alone. Only Jesus can give what the modern man is missing. Jesus is the gate (Jn 10:9). Jesus is the resurrection and the life (Jn 11:25). Jesus is the way, the truth and the life (Jn 14:6). He knows our frustration, unhappiness and disappointment. He knows our deepest longing. “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. My yoke is easy, and my burden light.” Are we ready to accept the invitation of Jesus or the temptations of the world? Are we willing to find real happiness, peace and meaning for life in Jesus or ruin our life in pleasure, sex and power?
