A final decision that Gentiles need not be circumcised was reached in Jerusalem. It seems that an allowance was made to the fledgling Antioch Christian community (the branch) in order to keep them in communion with Jerusalem (the vine).
Our vocation as a branch of the vine is to remain attached to the vine. Detached, it cannot bear fruit.
Thus, there is a new unity in mutual abiding. If I abide in Jesus, his words will abide in me; and I too become “the word of God incarnate”!
