Commentary on the Gospel of
The three readings today elaborate on what it means to follow Jesus.
The 1st reading shows that the initial move comes from God, with the mantle of God’s love envelopes me and claims me, as Elijah enfolds Elisha.
The 2nd reading points to the initial motivation for responding to the call: the love for the person of Jesus.
The Gospel reading shows the single-minded commitment to Jesus and to following him. I set my face on Jesus, and I let nothing distract me from keeping him in view all the time. Nothing is as urgent or more important than the following of Jesus.
