Commentary on the Gospel of

Should the disciples have worried? After all, it wasn’t they who took the initiative to get into the boat; it wasn’t their journey. It was Jesus who got into the boat first and the disciples merely followed him; it was Jesus’s own journey. No wonder Jesus rebuked them. Why were they so afraid, if it was their own master who was leading them, though he appeared to be sleeping?

We who choose to walk in the footsteps of Christ will not always have it easy. Storms may hit us and earthquakes may threaten. But we can rest assured that even when God seems to be asleep, He watches over us. “I sleep, but my heart watches” (Song 5:2). And we can say with faith: “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me” (Ps. 23: 4).
