Commentary on the Gospel of
Ex 16: 1-5,9-15; Mt 13: 1-9
The pertinent question regarding the ‘hoarfrost’ in the First Reading is “What is this?” asked by the children of Israel to one another. An obvious response given at the Eucharist is, “This is the Lamb of God ….” However, in the context of the Gospel, it is the Word of God.
This Word comes in varied ways --- in desert-like difficulties, in grumblings, in our yearnings, and above all in community --- seeing that the question above was asked of one another. Anything else today, short of community, is the Word falling on withering soil.
