Commentary on the Gospel of

Fr. Johnson Joseph Thurackal CMF

Jesus chose Galilee as his mission headquarters. He did not want to establish his missionary launch pad in his home town. The reason was clear. His hometown rejected Christ. Scripture is fulfilled in this decision of Jesus. As Jesus plunge into his mission in his chosen territory, we note what the Evangelist is saying about his mission. Jesus’ mission was people and he focussed on them.

He went to all the lands where people were in need. He brought them out of darkness and showed them light. He lifted people from death and gave them life. In Jesus everyone can choose light and has the opportunity to walk out of darkness into light. People who sit in darkness, who are comfortable with the way they are and who are pleased with their lives now see a great light. There is hope and grace for everyone to be saved from doom and death.

Therefore, Jesus inaugurates his mission with a call to repentance. In Jesus, God’s Kingdom is near. Conversion, which is turning away from sin and a turning to God, will enable us to experience the closeness of God’s Kingdom and its reign over us.
