Commentary on the Gospel of

Fr. Luis Manuel Suárez CMF
The figure of Jesus is so great that in the Scriptures he is called in different ways: the Messiah, the son of man, the son of God... Or with some elements, like the living water, the light of the world, the bread of life...

On this occasion, the Gospel presents Jesus as "the good shepherd". An image that may seem distant to those of us with an urban culture, but which in our time, as in the time of Jesus, can be understood without difficulty. The good leader, we could say today.

The good shepherd is not the same as the wage-earner. The latter "does not care about the sheep", but about the benefits his activity brings: economic profit, possession over others, social recognition... Jesus, on the other hand, is the good shepherd. He knows and is known, he gives himself freely, he reaches the most distant...

In our Church we need good pastors: good catechists and animators, good religious men and women, good priests and bishops... Also in our society: good parents, good teachers, good politicians... Of those who really care about those in their charge. Of those who are dedicated to their work. Of those who help life to develop... To be shepherds without ceasing to be sheep. Disciples of the Good Shepherd.

Continue to send, Lord, good leaders and guides to our Church and to our world.
