Commentary on the Gospel of

Martín Areta Higuera cmf

A teacher´s career is called to go a long way. It begins one day with feelings of fear and illusion, and ends suddenly, one night, during a retirement party. This career, as the experienced teachers say, runs fast. The reason is that when you are busy, you don´t have much time to think and watch time go by. At least, when the end is near, there is an opportunity to take stock of your history, to collect the fruits you planted, and remember everything you learned while you tried to teach.

Saint Paul, the sinner and saint, the “last apostle” and the great missionary, wrote to Timothy at the end of his life. He felt his “good fight” was over, his “race” was finished, but not the Church´s race and fight.

The message of God -in Jesus- is planted into the Church, but this seed needs to grow up, and the people needs good teachers about God, as Paul was.

Today, we can think about our personal life. Who was my best teacher in life? Who were my teachers in faith? How important is it to me to teach others the Gospel, not to be famous or recognized, but to show “the presence of God and Jesus Christ” among us?
