Commentary on the Gospel of

Fr. Johnson Joseph Thurackal CMF

It is of great advantage to be alert and it is also a mark of disciplined life. The Gospel today reminds us of the need of this alertness in life. The reason is the uncertainty over the coming of the Lord. Therefore, as did the early Christians, many followers of Jesus also in our days maintain this wakefulness and keep the Lord always in their minds and hearts. Our thoughtfulness of God should never depart from daily life. The first Christian community kept alive the memory of Jesus, his death and resurrection, and remined holy and grateful always.

Lack of vigilance can invite disaster. If we are not alert, then the precious treasures can be lost to a thief at night. Our greatest treasure is the life of the soul. Presenting our soul spotless to the Lord at his return is at risk if we are not vigilant. Jesus wants us to be prepared. The watchfulness will deter the enemy from constantly inducing us to mediocre and indifferent attitudes to spiritual matters and to procrastinate the care of the soul. The Gospel points to the urgency of conversion and renewal of life without delay. The only way to be ready for the Lord is by obeying what he has commanded us to do (v. 46). His return must find us doing His work and caring for people entrusted to us.
