Commentary on the Gospel of

Victoria Sanchez - School Teacher in Madrid

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C ) -  "Jesus proclaims the Good News ".

The first reading and the gospel speak to us of the word of God. The second reading was taken from the prophets and could be read by anyone who had reached the age of thirty. The gospel concluded by saying: "Today this scripture which you have just heard is fulfilled".

The Gospel passage has unified two different parts. In the first part Luke presents his work, the truthfulness of his testimony and his goal. In the second part it is Jesus who, anointed by the Holy Spirit, makes himself known to his fellow countrymen as the one sent by God, who announces salvation to the poor, frees captives and heals the sick. It is in his person and in his work that he finally fulfils what God has promised to his people.

If we want to experience the evolution that his disciples went through, we have to listen, meditate and rejoice in the Word of God. Perhaps sometimes we do not succeed because we do not read it properly, because it must be read in an atmosphere of spirituality, faith and prayer. The Lord says: "Without me you can do nothing".

Before the word of God there are two positions. The first is doubt. This is magnificent! I understand everything. And the other one. I understand nothing. Between the two positions, there is only one right attitude: Mary's. She did not understand what he was saying, but she kept all these things in her heart.

In today's Gospel Luke tells us that Jesus carries out his evangelising activity with the power of the Holy Spirit. His Word is original, Jesus is authoritative and different from the teachers of His time. Jesus taught that people who were full of sorrow were the centre of God's heart, and that mercy towards them was the key to heaven. ( Pope Francis )

Lord Jesus: Give us that courage that made you present yourself as the fulfillment of God's promises. May whoever sees us know you and whoever hears us love you.

(Psalm 18) Your words, Lord, are spirit and life.

HAPPY SUNDAY TO ALL!
