Commentary of the Gospell
Ascension of the Lord – “Know that I will be with you always”.
The Ascension of the Lord is a joyful reminder of the mission that Jesus gave to his apostles: “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28,19). This is the mission of the Church: to present Christ to all nations, that is to say, all that Jesus said and did, to testify that he is the Saviour of all. Jesus wants them to make disciples, i.e. free men. Because freedom is one of the characteristics of the follower of Jesus. He never imposed, he proposed. The command to make disciples of him will never be carried out if we only preach that we have to serve others if we do not do it ourselves. It is necessary to live what we say we believe. We often give out the bread of the Gospel, but we are not able to awaken a hunger for it. Perhaps their misfortune comes from a lack of witness. “It is not enough that you give the Gospel, you have to open, with your life, the passion to eat it”. (Pedro Casaldaliga). you always, to the end of the age”. He knows very well the enormous disproportion that exists between the personal worth of the disciples and the missionary work that he entrusts to them. That is why they will need the Lord’s help, the power of the Spirit, the presence of Himself. It is this knowledge that Christ is with us that has animated all Christian communities from their beginnings to the present day, because we are not alone, lost in the midst of the world, abandoned to our own strength, limitations and sin.
Jesus is still alive and active in the Christian community where two or more are gathered in his name (Mt.18,20). Christ is still present among us through faith, the Word, the sacraments, the brethren, especially if they are sick, children, and the needy. “As you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me”.8 He always guarantees us his presence through his Spirit, who will remind us of what he said and did and how we have to act in the here and now of history.
One evening the disciples of Emmaus asked him: “Stay with us” Here is Jesus’ answer: he stays, but not for an evening or a night, but every day.
PRAYER: Lord, in the darkest moments, when we suffer abandonment, betrayal….. Let us not forget that you are with us every day.
ACTION :Let us have a small gesture of celebration with those closest to our hearts.
“HAPPY SUNDAY TO ALL”.
