Shine where you are

We are trailing that sermon of Jesus from the mount from where we left off yesterday. Jesus, like a motivational speaker, urges his listeners today: “You are the light of the world.” But how can we shine as brightly as light bulbs in a world of flickering candles?

Imagine waking up in the morning and looking out the window, we might see the first light of dawn or the lingering shadows of night… Well, life is a lot like that window view. Sometimes, we stumble, bumping into doubts, fears, and unanswered questions. But then—the light breaks through, and clarity floods in. It’s crucial to recognize that we have the ability to make a significant difference in the lives of those around us.

Converting the light metaphor to real life means to be the voice for the voiceless. Shine a spotlight on injustice as if it’s the hottest gossip in town. Be authentic and help people shed their pretences to be themselves. This would make us a little vulnerable, but no one has seriously helped anyone without getting wounded themselves.”

The Lord calls us to be the salt of the earth. Picture us at a dinner party, where the chef invites us to sprinkle a pinch of salt into the dishes. That small sprinkle of salt transforms blandness into a burst of flavour. And that salt is you. Your kindness seasons conversations. Your laughter spices up dull days. Your empathy turns bitterness into sweetness. When you feel the Church is insignificant, remember: you’re the secret ingredient that makes life delicious. A little speck is enough.

So, as we sip our morning coffee or herbal tea, let’s ask ourselves: How can I add flavour to someone’s day? Shine where you are—whether it’s your office cubicle, the grocery aisle or the Church.
