Commentary on the Gospel – November 11, 2025

And we should also be grateful. Because the Lord of life has come to bring us life, and following his ways and obeying his commands is a sure path to that life. That’s why we are Christians—followers and disciples of Jesus. Or maybe the question is: do we really believe that following the Gospel is the only path to true life?

We can start by reflecting a little on what his commands actually are. Jesus didn’t give us a long list of rules. The truth is, his commands are simple, clear, and easy to understand. There’s one central commandment: “Love one another as I have loved you.” His entire life is the explanation of the second part of that commandment—“as I have loved you.”

When we read the Gospels, we find a Jesus who draws near to everyone, who speaks with everyone. But he reaches out in a special way to the poor and the marginalized—to those society rejects. Because they, too, are beloved sons and daughters of God.

The love of Jesus is shown in his healing, in his presence, in his listening, in his feeding of the hungry. And he tells us this in many of his parables. The conclusion is clear: that’s how we must love one another. Because only there—in mutual love, in respect, in justice—will we find life. In short, that’s where the Kingdom is. What Jesus proposes is the only real path to life, to true life. Every other path humanity has taken throughout history—war, violence, hatred, envy—has led only to death.

To work for the Kingdom is, in fact, to work for ourselves. To love one another, to love our neighbor as he loved us, is to care for and love ourselves. Where else can we find salvation if not in love, mercy, and forgiveness?

That’s why we can say with peace what Jesus tells us to say: “We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.” Our duty is to work for the Kingdom—because that’s the only way to find life. Everything else leads us only toward death.
