Gospel Commentary for August 18, 2025

August 18, 2025

Dear friends,

When learning a language, we usually talk about three levels: a beginner level, where we take the first steps; an intermediate level, where we can manage daily conversation; and an advanced level, which allows for full communication.

Life is a bit like that, too. Sometimes we live through hard times, where our only goal is to survive. Other times we manage to move forward, gaining confidence and growing step by step. And hopefully, there are moments when we can truly thrive — living with freedom and purpose, even amid the ups and downs of the world around us.

The Gospel always aims high — but with our feet firmly on the ground. That’s what we see in today’s Gospel, in the conversation between Jesus and the young man. The young man’s goal is good: he wants eternal life — a full and meaningful life in this world that continues into the next. He is aiming high.

Jesus responds with something very grounded — the commandments. Love God and love your neighbor. Honor your family. Respect life and others. Defend justice and truth.

The young man says he already does all this, but he still feels like something is missing. Then Jesus invites him to something deeper: to live like Him and with Him.
“If you want to be perfect, sell what you have, give the money to the poor, and come follow me.”

But sadly, this young man didn’t have a heart as young as his age. He was too attached to his wealth… and he walked away sad.

In life, there are times when we’re just getting by. That’s still better than being stuck. But Jesus always invites us to go further — to take the next step, to live life as a challenge shaped by the Gospel, and to reach the final level of the “game of life.” That step will look different for each one of us.

Here we are, Lord,
on the journey of life,
seeking direction and what is real.
Don’t stop waking us from our comfort zones,
so we can give ourselves, like You, where we are needed.
Living lightly and trusting in You.

Your brother in faith,
