The key is to trust.

When we live our lives guided by distrust, everything starts to feel like a threat. We feel insecure about everything, and fear becomes our most common emotion. Someone may reach out their hand to greet us, but we might still wonder if they’ll close it into a fist to hurt us instead. Without trust, there is no life, no growth. When we are born, we are completely vulnerable and naturally trust our parents. But when that trust is broken and turns into mistrust, it’s like dark storm clouds hanging over us all the time.

In the Church, we talk a lot about having faith in God. But we often forget that trust is the deep attitude that makes life possible. We rely on the people around us, especially those closest to us. We trust the food we’re given. We trust the architect who designed the building we live in, and the workers who built it. We trust that other drivers will follow traffic rules. We trust that the shop owner is truly selling us what he claims, and not cheating us. We trust the friend to whom we share a secret, believing they won’t go around telling others. We trust that the person who says they love us really does.

Faith isn’t only about our relationship with God — it’s a basic human attitude. In fact, we could say that without trust, life isn’t possible.

Maybe we won’t be able to step out of the boat like Peter and walk on water. But our lives are also built on faith and trust. Without them, we cannot truly live or experience love.

The Kingdom of God is built on mutual trust and trust in God. Because only trust can build true brotherhood. That doesn’t mean we’ll never have doubts — Peter did too — but trust will help us keep walking. Because we trust in God.
