Gospel Reflection – February 4, 2026

Mark writes: “He was not able to perform any mighty deed there” because his neighbors “took offense at Him.” They asked themselves: “Where did this man get all this? Who taught him to speak like this?”

They move from admiration to disbelief: “We have known him since he was a boy; we know his family. He is just the carpenter’s son.” In his own hometown, they refuse to recognize God in the familiar, in the humble, in the everyday. They all knew his profession. They knew who his family was, his brothers and sisters. Why do they do this to Him? Perhaps because they did not want to accept His words, His deeds, or His wisdom.

Jesus encountered a massive roadblock in all of them. They were too tied to tradition and the past. But Jesus continued “going around to the villages and teaching.” He did not stay stuck in rejection or disappointment.

Let us learn the lesson. In the very place where one hopes to find welcome and encouragement, one might find indifference and misunderstanding. Like Jesus, let’s not get paralyzed; let’s take another step toward the new, toward what is yet to come.
