Commentary on the Gospel of

Fr. Gregory Ekene Ezeokeke, cmf

The term “generation” is a very important biblical concept especially of the Old Testament. Most Laws are required to be passed down to generations (cf. Num 15:12; 35:29). But even more importantly for the context and interpretation of Luke 11, the term “evil generation” evokes Deut 1:35 which speaks of the evil generation of Israelites that were beginning to forget the statutes of God.

When Jesus describes his generation as evil because they seek a sign, he ties this with the idea of rejection of God in his person. The call for us today is to accept Jesus in simple, ordinary things of life and to understand that seeking God in a wondrous manifestation shows a lack of faith and an inability to understand God who constantly speaks to us in simple things
