Find God in all things
The Gospel tells us about John the Baptist’s beheading. In a dictatorship, who would be brave enough to advocate for freedom of speech? Speaking out against the ruler’s character is nothing but suicidal. It continues to be the same even today.
Herod Antipas was the ruler of Galilee from 4 BC to 39 AD, which means he governed Galilee during Jesus’ lifetime and even after. It was suicidal for the Baptist to interfere with the governor’s personal life.
Political figures frequently advise religious authorities to restrict their activities to spiritual matters and let politicians handle political affairs. However, this is akin to suggesting that only the military should be involved in wars or only bankers should have a say in financial matters. Religion has a message for all.
Starting from the era of the Prophets in the Old Testament, through to John the Baptist, Jesus, and the numerous martyrs of the Church, individuals of faith stood firm and unyielding in the face of political authority. Despite being silenced by force, their silence resonated as the most powerful testament against those who perpetuated lies and injustice.
The Baptist was fearless in risking his life to speak out against the governor’s immoral behaviour. The Gospel hints that Jesus, too, will face condemnation for standing up for the truth. Until the very end, Jesus advocates for the lives and dignity of all of God’s children, especially sinners, the lepers, the poor and the abandoned.
