Saint Blaise

Bishop and Martyr – optional memorial

Blaise, bishop of Sebaste in Armenia, is said to have been a martyr during the persecution of Licinius (around the year 316). Historically, however, he is a very obscure figure—so much so that it may seem surprising that he has been kept in the new Roman calendar of 1969. His inclusion is explained by the great popularity and devotion he continues to enjoy in many regions.

Even today, in many places, priests give the well-known “Blessing of Saint Blaise” on his feast day, invoking protection against throat ailments. According to legend, shortly before his martyrdom, Blaise healed a boy who was choking after swallowing a fishbone.
