Saints John de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues and Companions

Priests Martyrs – optional memorial

This memorial includes eight French Jesuits: Isaac Jogues, René Goupil, John de La Lande, John de Brébeuf, Gabriel Lalemant, Anthony Daniel, Charles Garnier, and Noel Chabanel. They were missionaries among the Huron people in territories that today are part of Canada and the United States.

They were killed by the Iroquois, who were enemies of the Hurons, between the years 1642 and 1649. October 18 is the date of the martyrdom of Isaac Jogues and John de La Lande, who died in Auriesville in 1647.

All eight missionaries were canonized together in 1930. In the universal calendar of the Western Church, they represent North America.
