Commentary on the Gospel of

BD

As little children, we used to play Hen and Eagle. The leader of the group acts as mother hen trying to protect her little chicks that hold on tightly to her. The mother hen will do everything to defend her chicks against the attack of the eagle. When the chick loses its grip on the mother, the eagle can successfully capture the chick. Jesus likened himself to a hen gathering her young under her wings. Don’t we feel safe under the shadow of his wing? But like the Pharisees in the today’s gospel, sometimes we refuse to be gathered. Sometimes we prefer not to hold on to Jesus and want freedom, allowing ourselves to be exposed to the attacked of the evil. Remember that only when a chick cuts its connection with the hen will the eagle have a chance to catch it.
