Commentary on the Gospel of

Paulson Veliyannoor, CMF

The Church has no authority of her own, except the authority that is given to her by the Lord. The Church has no mission of her own, except the Missio Dei, the Mission of God entrusted to her by Christ. The Church has no reason to exist other than the mission her Master has given her. And the Church has no reason to distrust or back out of the authority and the mission her Lord has given.  This is true of the Church in general and every individual member of it. David Bosch writes:

“The classical doctrine on the missio Dei as God the Father sending the Son, and God the Father and the Son sending the Spirit was expanded to include yet another “movement”: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit sending the church into the world. . . . Our mission has no life of its own: only in the hands of the sending God can it truly be called mission, not least since the missionary initiative comes from God alone. (Transforming Mission)
