Commentary on the Gospel of

Fr Alvaro Rodriguez, cmf

"WHY DO YOU EAT AND DRINK WITH TAX COLLECTORS AND SINNERS?"

Somebody once said that Jesus died for his way of eating. At first, this sounds a bit strange, but if we reflect about this we can discover it is the truth. Jesus came to teach us how we have to live, to say God is our father and all of us are brothers.

It is pretty strange, maybe for our mentality, but sinners were the first followers of Jesus. Obviously, it is not necessary to be a great sinner to follow Jesus, although only those who recognise their own sin are open to God. The Pharisees didn't need Jesus, because they didn’t think they were sinners.

Are we those who believe we don't need Jesus and his salvation? Or might we benefit from this message of Jesus? Hopefully we can hear the words of Jesus, who says to us "follow me" and answer like Levi, leaving everything.
